  • Jan Piechura 1936 - 2012

We deeply regret the death of our long-time colleage, BALTEX SSG member
and outstanding oceanographer Jan Piechura who passed away on 12 November 2012.

Read the obituary by IO-PAN Director and BALTEX SSG member Janusz Pempkowiak here ...
Communication by Ocean Circulation Laboratory at IO-PAN here...

Tribute by Anders Omstedt on behalf of the BALTEX Community:
It is a great loss for the BALTEX community and particularly for us oceanographers that Professor Jan Piechura is not with us anymore. Jan performed a very interesting scientific work by studying the inflow dynamics to the Baltic Sea by using high resolution measuring methods. He always reminding us that nature is more complex than our models and therefore pushed us to improve our understanding. Through many BALTEX meetings I had the opportunity to become a friend to Jan and sometimes we also discussed hobbies, and his interest in roses made me happy.

  • In Memoriam John Roads (1950 - 2008). With sadness and consternation we learned about the untimely death of John Roads, former GHP chair and CEOP co-chair. John was a true friend to BALTEX, he had been a regular participant at BALTEX conferences and, indeed, was the lead author of one of the first comprehensive papers on the water and energy budgets of the BALTEX region. We are mourning with his family, friends and colleagues.  A trust fund will soon be established in John's name in favour of graduate students to attend climate science conferences.
